The Corfu Golf and Country Club

On the west coast of Corfu is an 18 hole, par 72 golf course, open through November. Beautifully landscaped, with treelined fairways (and sandtraps) the course is attracting more and more international sportsmen… and golfing ornithologists.

Three-hearted castle: Oiniades

In mythology captured by Heracles, this southwestern site was fortified by the Akarnanians in the sixth century B.C. and later by Philip V of Macedon, whose architectural additions form the ‘three hearts’ of the castle. West German and Athenian archaeologists begin excavating this fall.

The Mind and Body of the Olympic Ideal

Two important exhibitions are currently being held in Athens. One is a comprehensive collection of Greek art devoted to ancient athletic contests. The second focuses on the revival of the Olympic ideal in 19th century Greece, culminating in the Olympic Games of 1896.

The Great Salonica Fire

Started, it is thought, by spilled cooking oil, the Salonica Fire of 1917 destroyed more than 9500 buildings, with damages estimated at£ 80,000,000. The British Salonica Force took on the tasks of fighting the flames and evacuating and sheltering some 77,000 refugees- a testament to Anglo-Hellenic friendship.
