Three-hearted castle: Oiniades
In mythology captured by Heracles, this southwestern site was fortified by the Akarnanians in the sixth century B.C. and later by Philip V of Macedon, whose architectural additions form the ‘three hearts’ of the castle. West German and Athenian archaeologists begin excavating this fall.
